What to see in Monreale

The heart of the town is the Cathedral of Monreale, considered one of the greatest masterpieces of medieval European art. Inside, more than 6,000 square metres of golden mosaics illustrate scenes from the Old and New Testaments. The monumental Christ Pantocrator in the apse leaves a lasting impression.

Next to the cathedral lies the Benedictine Cloister, a place of peace and harmony composed of 228 finely carved columns, each one different from the others. It is regarded as one of the most beautiful cloisters in Europe.

A short walk away, the Belvedere of Monreale offers breathtaking views over Palermo, its harbour and the coastline.

The historic centre completes the visit with narrow streets, artisan workshops, ceramic shops and small eateries where you can taste traditional Palermo street food.

Monreale can be visited all year round. Spring and autumn provide ideal temperatures for walking and enjoying the views. Summer can be hot, but the hilltop location ensures a pleasant breeze. In December, the village becomes especially charming thanks to its Christmas atmosphere and festive markets.

📌 Tip: visit the cathedral early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid crowds and enjoy the best

What to bring

Comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for steps and uphill paths are recommended. In summer, bring water and a hat. A smartphone or camera is essential to capture the golden mosaics. Keep a few euros handy for the cloister entrance.
