Carnival of Sciacca 2026 – 400 Years of Tradition

In 2026, the Carnival of Sciacca celebrates a historic milestone: 400 years of tradition. Recognized as a Historic Carnival by the Italian Ministry of Culture, it is considered the oldest in Sicily and one of the most spectacular in Italy.

It is not simply a parade. It is a complex organization that brings together art, satire, music, theatre and strong community participation.

Official Dates 2026

20 – 21 – 22 February
28 February – 1 March

Five intense days featuring masked parades, live performances, family events and major evening shows.

What Makes the Carnival of Sciacca Unique

The uniqueness lies in its structure:

Monumental papier-mâché allegorical floats with complex mechanical movements.
Original scripts that transform each parade into a travelling theatrical performance.
Handcrafted costumes created specifically for each theme.
Original music composed exclusively for every float.

Each performance is presented on the main stage in Via Allende, with an afternoon show and an evening repeat.

The Allegorical Floats — The Heart of the Show

The allegorical floats are the element that truly distinguishes the Carnival of Sciacca.

They are large-scale moving works of art, built months in advance by local associations and master papier-mâché artists. Each float presents current themes, social or political satire, creative allegories and cultural references.

These structures are not static decorations but dynamic scenic machines, animated by synchronized movements, lighting effects, music and scripted narration.

Main characteristics:

High-quality artistic papier-mâché using traditional local techniques.
Impressive dimensions, often exceeding 5–6 meters in height.
Mechanical elements and stage lighting designed for both daytime and evening shows.
Allegorical themes with satire and contemporary references.
Choreographed performances accompanying each float.

The parade becomes a narrative experience, transforming the city into an open-air theatre.

Costumes and Masked Groups — Living Scenography

Alongside the floats, the masked groups represent one of the most fascinating and essential components of the Carnival.

Each group wears unique costumes, entirely handcrafted and designed specifically for the theme of the float they accompany. These costumes are not simple decorative elements but a fundamental part of the theatrical narrative.

Every detail — colors, fabrics, textures, shapes and symbols — is carefully studied to reinforce the message and visual impact of the float.

The masked groups perform choreographies and scripted movements, interacting with the audience and giving life to the allegorical story. The synergy between the monumental float (scenic structure) and the performing group (movement and interpretation) creates a complete theatrical production in motion.

The result is not just a parade, but a form of popular theatre and collective celebration involving hundreds of participants of all ages.
